Dialysis - Medical Water

Water Purification for Dialysis Treatment

When a person's kidneys can no longer filter waste from the blood, they are said to be suffering from kidney failure. In the event of kidney failure, there are a number of treatments available, including dialysis.

What Is Dialysis?

The Kidney Foundation of Canada describes dialysis in the following terms: "Dialysis is a treatment that cleans your blood and removes excess fluid from your body when your kidneys are no longer healthy enough to do these important jobs. This type of therapy is available at home or in a hospital or clinic..."

Among the treatments offered to dialysis patients are peritoneal dialysis and the hemodialysis we're interested in here. It is precisely during hemodialysis care that Adaptaid's water treatment solutions become important assets. They consist of four cart units dedicated to the pretreatment of dialysis water, whose portability enables patients to receive their care at home or in other locations such as dialysis centers, hospitals and acute care facilities.

Why Filter Water Before Dialysis?

The quality of the water used in dialysis is subject to special requirements in order to reduce toxic or infectious risks and ensure the safety of the dialysis patient. Before starting hemodialysis treatments, the water supplied to the machines must be tested to make sure it meets the requirements specified by the Institut national de santé publique du Québec or by the authorities in your region.

It's important to note that purified water for dialysis is not obtained by simple filtration, nor by water purification processes such as UV oxidation, ion exchange resins or activated carbon.

Only water purification techniques tested and approved in the medical industry, such as the principle of the reverse osmosis system or distillation, produce the purified water essential for hemodialysis. These advanced physical processes can only be carried out by specialized equipment.

How Do Dialysis Carts Work?

Adaptaid has developed four water pretreatment carts, also known as "dialysis carts." These compact, mobile solutions are designed to transport the filtration equipment required for water pretreatment, as well as the reverse osmosis system.

What Is the Purpose of the Water Filtration System?

The activated carbon filtration system on dialysis carts produces purified water by removing various substances, including chlorine compounds. This purified water is then fed to the reverse osmosis system, which eliminates harmful substances such as endotoxins, bacteria and viruses before feeding the unit for dialysis treatment. To ensure effective water pre-treatment, Adaptaid's dialysis carts are fitted with filters that retain particles from 1µm to 5µm, including the majority of bacteria.

In its range of water treatment products, Adaptaid offers four mobile solutions to meet different needs: the Aquadial, Aquacart, Aqualite and Aqualite Stand

Aquadial

Popular for its wraparound structure that protects filtration equipment, the Aquadial produces dialysis water of the highest quality by combining sediment and activated carbon filters on the same cart. The spacious cart also features a transport area for a reverse osmosis system, a basket for supplies, an external water distribution loop and a control panel with pressure gauges and sampler. Aquacart

For dialysis care at home, in dialysis centers, in the emergency room or in hospital acute care units, the Aquacart is recognized as a portable, versatile and functional water pretreatment solution. A very user-friendly cart, with an easy-to-read control panel and dedicated space for the osmosis unit. It offers complete water pretreatment thanks to a filtration system that can be combined with several reverse osmosis models. Learn more

Aqualite

Developed to optimize space, the Aqualite offers a lightweight, portable water pretreatment solution for medical water production. Despite its compact size, both reverse osmosis and water treatment systems fit on the cart. Learn more...

Aqualite Stand

This water filtration unit is perfectly suited to home use. It offers several advantages, including an ultra-compact water pretreatment solution without compromising the filtration quality required for dialysis care. Learn more...

Which Reverse Osmosis Systems Are Compatible with Dialysis Carts?

Adaptaid offers water pretreatment solutions adapted to dialysis that have the advantage of being compatible with the most common reverse osmosis systems on the North American market. The cart's filtration systems are located next to the unit's housing, so that Millenium HX, Millenium, WRO 300 and WRO 300 H reverse osmosis systems (to name but a few) can all be accommodated.

For dialysis patients and care teams, it's essential to have a reliable, mobile water treatment system on hand at all times. To cope with emergency situations and dialysis care in a variety of locations, Adaptaid has designed its dialysis carts with a focus on mobility, efficiency and reliability. Sensitive to the needs and requirements of the medical industry, the company continues to innovate and improve the quality of its products.
