Discover the Best Features of Prep and Pack Tables

Medical device reprocessing departments (MDRD) face multiple challenges related to the cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, storage and distribution of medical devices (MD). Tools used for these tasks include prep and pack tables that facilitate the inspection and packaging of medical devices for reuse in patient care and services. It is these tables and their characteristics that we will discuss in more detail in the article below.

Today's prep and pack tables are designed to be comfortable while facilitating the work of preparing and packaging surgical instruments in MDRD.

To be effective, their configuration includes a comprehensive set of equipment and accessories that can be arranged to optimize workflow and ergonomics.

Since the needs of reprocessing staff are varied, preparation and packing tables must be designed to provide true workstations that are quickly adaptable.

In MDR, many activities are performed in a standing position, sometimes with repetitive tasks. Some processes, such as MD inspection and assembly, require good dexterity, concentration and excellent visual acuity; elements that must be taken into account.

Thus, the preparation of workstations for MD reprocessing involves organized planning and attention to detail. The goal is to ensure that the work space will minimize postural, visual and musculoskeletal strain on the users.

Essentially, the installation of a prep and pack table should achieve the following objectives:

  • Enhanced ergonomics

  • Improved organization

  • Optimal configuration and workflow

This is the foundation on which MDR Technicians can perform their tasks in a safe, pleasant and efficient work environment.

Why Use a Prep and Pack Workstation?

A workstation is required to safely handle clean, disinfected instruments ready for inspection, organization and packaging in sterile wraps. Some tasks, including MD inspection and assembly, require concentration, visual acuity and dexterity.

Therefore, the prep and pack table is designed as a fully integrated workstation with the right equipment to maximize productivity while creating an ergonomic environment.

Choosing the Right Options

The first step is to ensure that all necessary equipment and accessories are available and fully functional. This includes selecting and placing all medical instruments and supplies in close proximity to the sterilization technicians so that they are ready for use.

It is also important to ergonomically arrange all necessary accessories, such as trays, containers, traceability systems, wraps and more to ensure that the workstation is configured for optimal workflow.

Opt For Comfortable Table Top Dimensions

Fortunately, table tops come in a variety of sizes, so you can choose the most appropriate dimensions: small, medium or large work surface.

When calculating the size of the tabletop you need, think about all the items that will be on it and then add an extra length to your calculations. After all, it's best to be prepared for unexpected changes that may increase your space needs.

Also, if your room is small, a pull-out tray under the work surface will provide the extra work space you need when needed.

Other Must-Have Work Surface Features

Durable Surface

For ultimate resistance to hospital disinfectants and repetitive cleaning, the ideal choice is a high-quality, non-porous stainless steel top (grade 304) that can withstand hydrogen peroxide-based products.

Non-reflective Surface

By choosing a non-reflective surface, visual inspections will be facilitated and Reprocessing Technicians will not experience visual fatigue.

Height Adjustable Table Top

Knowing that several users of different sizes can use the same workstation, it is preferable to opt for a height adjustable table top.

Adjusting the height of the table top has two major advantages: on the one hand, it facilitates alternating between standing and sitting work, and on the other hand, it provides a quick and personalized adjustment for people of all sizes.

The Table Upper Module

The upper module of a prep and pack table provides efficient storage for accessories and supplies used in medical device reprocessing. Each MDRD has specific needs, and it is important to plan a configuration that optimizes both productivity and ergonomics according to the specificities and constraints of the department and its users.

There are many options available to customize the upper module. Here are a few examples:

  • Top storage shelf with anti-fall lip to free up the table top by keeping work tools in a safe place located within easy reach.

  • Hanger bar for multiple storage bins of various sizes to keep supplies organized.

  • Tape and label dispenser to free up work space with upper module mounting.

  • Multi-outlet power strip and grommet for easy connection of monitors, traceability systems, and more, directly to the table.

  • Compressed air gun with gun holder that allows immediate and ergonomic access to users.

  • Articulating arm for single or dual monitor to facilitate custom adjustment for each user.

  • Magnetic white board that allows for different types of displays.

  • Low-glare LED light head with dimmer switch for uniform, adjustable illumination when inspecting instruments and sterile packaging materials.

Other Useful Equipment

In addition to the upper module, there are several options that can enhance the functions of MDR technicians.

Additional equipment, which optimizes inspection and packaging activities by enhancing the ergonomics of the workstation, includes these:

  • Sliding keyboard and mouse tray that can be put back in place as soon as it is no longer needed.

  • Expandable work tray to increase the working space when large instruments are handled (e.g. orthopedic instruments).

  • Sterile wrap rack integrated to the prep and pack table to optimize ergonomics and productivity during the packaging process. Note that some models can be closed after use to save space.

  • Footrest to avoid musculoskeletal pain.

  • Printer and computer stands to keep technology tools close by without reducing the work surface.

  • Articulating magnifier lamp that facilitates inspection of instruments and packaging materials.

  • Pull-out lower shelf to store consumables nearby.

  • Storage drawer/box to organize and keep sterilization supplies in a safe place.

  • Casters with brakes for table mobility and stationary positions.

As we have just seen, preparation and packaging stations are valuable assets for MDRDs. Ensuring they are properly equipped for their intended purpose, will improve staff and patient safety.
